Burngate Drinking Water Reservoir Refurbishment
Introduction
UCL Ltd was engaged to refurbish Burngate Reservoir, an ageing clean water facility requiring structural repair and protective coating upgrades. The client, a major UK water utility provider, identified deterioration within the internal concrete substrate, posing a risk to the long-term performance of the potable water system. Compliance with drinking water regulations and minimising downtime were key project drivers.
Our Solution
Internal concrete surfaces were first subjected to rigorous preparation, including high-pressure water jetting and mechanical surface treatment, removing all loose and contaminated material to expose a clean, structurally sound substrate. The UCL team then applied Monomix WS wet-spray mortar to reinstate and consolidate degraded concrete. To complete the system, Cementitious Coating 851 was spray-applied — a WRAS/Regulation 31 approved waterproofing system known for its durability and resistance to water ingress and chemical attack, delivered in full compliance with potable water requirements.
Key Benefits
- Fully WRAS/Regulation 31 compliant repair and lining system
- High bond strength and compatibility with concrete substrates
- Enhanced durability and water resistance
- Minimised downtime through efficient spray-application techniques
- Safe for use in potable water environments
- Restored structural integrity of the reservoir
Conclusion
UCL Ltd delivered a technically compliant refurbishment of Burngate Reservoir, meeting both the functional and regulatory demands of clean water infrastructure. Combining specialist products with expertise in surface preparation and protective systems ensured a robust, long-lasting outcome for this critical water asset.
