Intumescent Coating for Supermarket Refurbishment
Introduction
A supermarket refurbishment required intumescent coating application to structural steelwork to achieve the specified fire resistance rating. UCL Ltd was engaged to deliver passive fire protection across the project, ensuring compliance with building regulations and the structural fire engineering requirements of the scheme.
Our Solution
UCL Ltd applied solvent-based intumescent coating to exposed structural steelwork throughout the refurbishment. Works were planned and executed to minimise disruption to the live retail environment, with application carried out in controlled conditions to ensure adhesion and film build consistency. All coatings were applied in accordance with manufacturer specifications and BS 8202, achieving the required 60-minute fire resistance rating. Surface preparation followed SSPC-SP6 standards, and wet film thickness was monitored throughout to verify dry film thickness compliance and system integrity.
Key Benefits
- Achieved specified 60-minute fire resistance rating to structural steelwork
- Works delivered within a live retail environment with minimal operational disruption
- Full compliance with BS 8202 and manufacturer application requirements
- Wet and dry film thickness monitoring ensured system performance and audit trail
- Coordinated programme reduced interface risk with other trades on site
Conclusion
UCL Ltd successfully delivered passive fire protection to a commercial refurbishment under occupied conditions. This project demonstrates our capability to apply intumescent systems to complex, live environments whilst maintaining full technical compliance and programme integrity.
