Reservoir Roof Waterproof Membrane — 950 sqm Polyurea Installation
Introduction
During the refurbishment of a service reservoir (SR) for a major utility company, UCL was engaged to install a high-performance waterproof barrier on the 950m² concrete roof. The primary objective was to eliminate surface water and contaminant ingress through the concrete structure, completely safeguarding the quality of the drinking water stored inside.
Our Solution
UCL specified and applied a pure polyurea spray lining across the 950m² concrete roof surface, creating a seamless, monolithic waterproofing membrane. This technical polymer solution exhibits excellent elongation properties, allowing the barrier to expand and contract dynamically alongside the thermal movement of the concrete slab while effortlessly withstanding significant crack growth. Due to its rapid-curing chemistry, the polyurea dried within seconds, achieving immense structural strength immediately upon application. This accelerated curing profile enabled the team to complete the entire 950m² installation in less than one week, and the client reinstated the overlying topsoil immediately after spraying, significantly minimising operational downtime.
Key Benefits
- Monolithic waterproofing — forms a seamless, continuous barrier that eliminates joints, seams and traditional points of failure
- High elongation and crack bridging — accommodates structural movement and thermal expansion, preventing failures from future concrete cracking
- Rapid curing profile — dries within seconds, developing immediate structural strength to accelerate project timelines
- Minimised asset downtime — the entire 950m² application was completed in under a week, allowing immediate topsoil reinstatement
- Contamination prevention — ensures absolute isolation of the underlying drinking water supply from external environmental elements
Conclusion
This fast-track engineered solution by UCL effectively sealed the service reservoir roof within tight time constraints. By leveraging polyurea's rapid cure and high elasticity, the project ensured long-term structural protection and drinking water safety while allowing immediate operational reinstatement of the site.
