Aged Asset Refurbishment — Concrete Preparation & Relining
Introduction
UCL Ltd was appointed to refurbish an aged concrete asset with no previous protective lining. Over time, the structure had developed soft surface build-up and deterioration, reducing durability and increasing the risk of future failure. The objective was to return the asset to a sound condition and install a new protective lining system to extend its operational lifespan.
Our Solution
Works commenced with high-pressure water jetting at 18,000 psi, removing all deteriorated and friable material and exposing a solid, sound concrete substrate suitable for repair and lining. The structure was then re-profiled using Sika 586, hand-applied to reinstate surface integrity and achieve a consistent profile ready for coating. Critical joints were treated using the Sika Combiflex system, incorporating Combiflex 933/930 banding to provide flexible, long-term waterproofing at movement-prone interfaces. The final stage involved the application of a spray-applied cementitious Flexcrete 851 topcoat, installed at 2mm thickness, providing structural waterproofing and long-term protection against moisture ingress.
Key Benefits
- Removal of all degraded material back to sound substrate
- Reinstatement of concrete profile using proven repair mortars
- Flexible joint waterproofing at critical interfaces
- Fully bonded cementitious lining system installed throughout
- Significant extension of asset service life
- Durable, low-maintenance protection with no previous lining required
Conclusion
This refurbishment demonstrates UCL Ltd's ability to renew ageing infrastructure, transforming deteriorated assets into fully protected structures with a new design life. Through controlled preparation, precise repair and high-performance lining systems, UCL Ltd delivers long-term asset resilience.
